Martin Luther King Day

9:00 AM / Comments (0) / by BayScope

Today marks the remembrance of a man who made a huge impact on society during the civil rights movement. Many of us are celebrating Dr. King with a day off of work or school, but the unfortunate few of us (such as myself) who don't have this holiday off will have to just keep it in mind. With that said, here are a few things to keep you busy today.

Martin Luther King Parade
Yerba Buena Center for the Arts
701 Mission St., San Francisco

This year's MLK celebration theme is "Sustaining the Dream." If you haven't been to one of these parades, you're missing out. Here there's a Mind, Body and Soul Festival, a Childrens Reading Festival, and a huge remembrance march all rolled into one. Everything is free to the public and kicks off at 9am, lasting till around 5. The MLK march starts at 11 and will begin at 4th and Townsend Ave., heading to the Yerba Buena Center. Get out and help celebrate.

Free Admission: Contemporary Jewish Museum
736 Mission St., San Francisco

In honor of Dr. King, the Contemporary Jewish Museum is offering free entries to the public from 11am till 5pm. If you haven't visited here yet, this is a great opportunity. Also there will be some great activities all molded around the holiday including the infamous "I Have a Dream" speech. Enjoy.

Free Admission: Museum of the African Diaspora
685 Mission St., San Francisco

Another great museum is opening its doors for free in honor of MLK Day. The Museum of the African Diaspora (M.O.A.D.) has some great activities and exhibits on the history and culture of African Americans. So if marching outside doesn't interest you, then this event may be just what you're looking for.
